Bangladesh is a country known for its thriving garment industry, with thousands of factories producing clothing and textiles for global brands. However, the country has also been plagued by environmental issues, including pollution and deforestation. In recent years, there has been a growing movement towards sustainable and eco-friendly factories, known as “green factories,” which are helping to address these issues.

According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the country now has 44 platinum green factories, 93 gold, 9 silver and another 4 LEED certified factory buildings. More than 500 garment factories are waiting for   the LEED certification from the USGBC.

Why Green Factories?

Green factories are designed to minimize their impact on the environment by reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste, and using renewable resources. They often incorporate features such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient lighting and machinery. These factories not only reduce their carbon footprint, but they also save money on energy costs and improve the health and safety of their workers.

Examples Please!!!

One example of a green factory in Bangladesh is the DBL Group’s “Green Knitting” factory. Located in the city of Gazipur, the factory is powered by a combination of solar and gas energy, with a goal of eventually becoming fully reliant on renewable energy. The factory also has a rainwater harvesting system, which collects and stores rainwater for use in the facility’s toilets and landscaping.

The Green Knitting factory also emphasizes worker safety and wellbeing, with features such as natural ventilation systems and ergonomic workstations. The factory has also implemented a waste management system, which includes recycling and composting, to minimize its environmental impact.

Now Bangladesh has 173 LEED-Certified Green Factories, highest in the world.

Are there more?

Another example is the Ananta Group’s “Green Factory,” which is located in the Savar district of Bangladesh. The factory has implemented a number of eco-friendly features, including a solar-powered lighting system, a rainwater harvesting system, and a wastewater treatment plant. The factory also uses eco-friendly materials in its production processes, such as organic cotton and recycled polyester.

The Ananta Group’s Green Factory has received numerous accolades for its sustainability efforts, including the “Best Green Factory” award from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in 2019.

Plummy Fashions Ltd (PFL) located in Narayanganj, 20 kilometers south from Dhaka city center has set an example of green industry in textile world.

Challenges

While there are still challenges to implementing green factories in Bangladesh, including the high cost of renewable energy and limited government incentives, the movement towards sustainability is gaining momentum. With more companies recognizing the benefits of eco-friendly production, there is hope that Bangladesh’s garment industry can become a leader in sustainable manufacturing practices.
